Manzanita Village

Manzanita Village, located at the University of California, Santa Barbara, is an 800-bed undergraduate student housing complex adjacent to the existing San Rafael Residence Hall. Near the Campus Lagoon on a promontory overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the new village is defined by residences accommodating 41 to 63 beds in each of 17 buildings, with residents occupying a mix of single- and double-occupancy rooms that share a lounge, study rooms, laundry, residentially scaled baths and, in a number of the units, kitchens.

A series of outdoor spaces extending from the existing housing, through a new central plaza and the three housing quads, to the ocean bluff allow visual access to the spectacular views to the Pacific and provides for outdoor and recreational activities. The project incorporates an expansion and renovation of the existing Carrillo Dining Commons, a multi-purpose building that includes conference spaces and student recreational rooms, and the DeAnza Resource Center, which provides additional meeting spaces as well as individual and group study facilities.

In addition to efforts undertaken to address sustainability issues within the buildings, the project makes every effort to lessen its impact on the surrounding, highly sensitive environment. This effort includes the use of recycled water, bio-swales, permeable paving and a drought tolerant planting scheme.
